Mission & Vision
-
"The shadows and specters of colonialism and imperialism do not go away on their own. They haunt, until we conduct an exorcism."
-
"Culture—like politics, like the military, like the economy—can be weaponized for social control. And, it is easier to control politics, the military, and the economy, if you first control culture."
-
"I examine the intricate dynamics of cultural influence, exploring how it intersects with other societal institutions to perpetuate hegemony and maintain power structures."
-
"By illuminating the pervasive influence of culture and its potential for both oppression and liberation, we gain insight into the mechanisms of social control that govern our lives."
-
"Through critical analysis and examination, I aim to unravel the complexities of cultural power and its implications for individual and collective agency."
-
"A world that does not value creativity does not understand liberty. When people fail to embrace imagination, the essence of freedom remains elusive."
-
"If we can’t liberate our imaginations, it’s going to be difficult to liberate anything else."
-
"I believe that creativity and liberation are intertwined forces espoused to unleash each other’s potential."
-
"Liberating creativity creates liberation. Creating liberation liberates creativity. I envision a future fueled by this creativity-liberation cycle."
-
"Join me in unlocking imagination’s potential to co-construct a world founded on the liberating power of creativity and the creative power of liberation."
-
"In community, let us rethink and reshape freedom and artistic expression beyond Western colonial paradigms."

For me, artistic expression is characterized by a fearless embrace of the abstract, non-linear aspects of subjective experience. Rather than shy away from the intricate quantum entanglements of the human psyche, I escort myself into uncharted, imaginative territories of vast continuums of infinity.
Without judgment, I excavate my own idiosyncrasies beyond the bounds of benchmarked depths, lengths, and widths, and ferret through tunnels of immeasurable distances often intentionally obscured by the chronic smoke of strict, imploding canons constructed by fragile, nescience puritans against so-called “indecorous behavioral deviance.”
Reclaiming the power of culture, storytelling, and artistic expression
Sans barometer and criteria, I celebrate “irrationality” and the logic of dreams—even the sanity of nightmares!—as they foster my creativity by allowing unconventional symbolisms to breathe, helix twist, and flower new inheritances. There's transformative power in accepting these inner workings of the mind, and so I continue to explore the shapelessness of my spectral consciousness.
By mining my interiority in search of symbolic richness, I forge connections between the personal and the universal, and unearth once-latent layers of meaning and complexity I’d previously speculated as unimaginable… as mere phantasmic mirages of miracles and myth.

Julián is deeply engaged in examining and understanding the vast and limitless aspects of imagination and existence (infinity) as well as the comprehensive, complete expressions of these concepts (totality). Julián engages in a philosophical, artistic, political, and intellectual pursuit of exploring boundless potentialities and how they are manifested in a finite world. The essence of my interest: the limitless and the complete, which highlight a profound engagement with expansive and holistic ideas.

Julián's Surgically Enhanced Mannequins
Audio excerpt of Julián’s critically acclaimed book
Ninety-Two Surgically Enhanced Mannequins:
A Micro-Poetry Collection
The ninety-two minimalist, at times surrealist and magical realist, pieces tackle the absurdity of what it means to be human and honor how moments, not plots, compose our lives. The collection is an attempt to capture these fleeting moments, while also trying to remember the intensity of the mundane and the abyss of the beautiful.
In his book Ninety-Two Surgically Enhanced Mannequins: A Micro-Poetry Collection and his album SFUMATO, Julián Esteban Torres López has created dreamlike experiences where everything conceivable and inconceivable can happen at once, and where time is not linear. Audio adaptation of my micro-poetry collection NINETY-TWO SURGICALLY ENHANCED MANNEQUINS into an experimental audiobook experience. This is a 10-minute sample of the first 13 out of 92 poems.

A cornerstone of the narrative revolution is the decolonization of the creative process. I invite creators to critically examine their creative choices, acknowledging the historical and cultural contexts that shape narratives. By deconstructing colonial imprints and challenging ingrained biases, storytellers contribute to a broader, more authentic representation of the human experience.
-
I coined the creative neologism “inopolitan” to represent a sense of independence from imposed colonial influences.
inopolitan:• A state of being not tied to a specific imposed colonial form of idealized citizenry.
• A state of being without imposed idealized colonial constraints.inopolitan defiance:
• A form of resistance or opposition to the colonial narratives and power structures that have imposed identities and narratives.
• A form of resistance that emphasizes a sense of reclaiming autonomy and self-definition outside of imposed colonial frameworks and paradigms.
In this talk, I explore the urgency of decolonial storytelling as a form of resistance against colonial narratives that have systematically erased and alienated Indigenous and ethnic minoritized groups from their authentic identities, histories, and senses of self. Drawing from personal experiences, creative works, and the philosophies of theorists like Edward Said, Aimé Césaire, and bell hooks, I dissect how colonialism's ideological domination relies on subjugating the "power to narrate" in order to impose distorted myths about the humanity of the oppressed. To rupture these colonial codes constricting realized selfhood, I argue for continually evolving new decolonial languages, stories, mythologies, symbolic praxes, and ways of being/knowing that emanate from the pluriversal cosmovisions and lived truths of colonized peoples themselves. By nurturing these counter-narratives from the margins, new cultural grammars for articulating self-determination and restoring severed existential ties to ancestors, lands, and spiritualities can take root. Decolonial storytelling thus serves as transformative truth-telling to seed decolonial futures where the most emancipated selves of the oppressed can be vividly realized and centered outside the colonial gaze's perpetual othering. In Inopolitan Defiance, I posit this ceaseless generation of decolonial narrative systems as crucial to the sacred work of facilitating collective self-determination, healing, and pluriversal belonging.
-
In this talk, I build upon the theoretical groundwork laid in its predecessor, "Inopolitan Defiance: Decolonizing Language, Reclaiming Narratives," to provide readers with actionable tools and methodologies for engaging in decolonial storytelling practice. Drawing on multidisciplinary insights and real-world case studies, this book offers practical guidance for researchers, activists, artists, and educators seeking to decolonize their storytelling processes and amplify marginalized voices. From ethical considerations in storytelling research to techniques for crafting decolonial narratives and strategies for community engagement, each chapter offers hands-on exercises, workshops, and examples to support readers in their journey toward decolonial praxis. By centering the voices and experiences of those most impacted by colonialism, this book invites readers to join in the collective work of liberation through storytelling.

“As an educator engaged with Critical Pedagogy, I admire how Julián’s public talk ‘Decolonizing Storytelling’ brought together actionable concepts in ways that encourage application in our classrooms and the lives of our students. Julián’s talk opened a space for important reflections on crucial topics for underrepresented communities such as political art, the politics of representation, and activism.”

“Reading Julian Esteban Torres López is like reading the writings of Russian poet and avant-gardist Daniil Kharms or one of the many heteronyms of Fernando Pessoa. But the poems’ minimalism reminds one of Zen koans: absurd, irrelevant, contradictory, imaginative, fun and beautiful.”
